Freelance writing is simply writing for several publications, magazine or authoring a book without having to be employed to a specific company. You work on a self-employed basis. If you happened to create articles or stories in different niches, your potentials for getting paid for your work becomes bigger.
One of the top things that attracted me to the life of freelancing is that I have full control of my time, thus a full control of my life as well. When you write a book, you can practically spend the whole day doing so without getting tired or hungry. At times, you get to enjoy a free day out with your family or kids as you try to stimulate your creative juices during writer’s block. You get to work at your own pace, at your own time, without having to go out or while hanging out on a park. Freelance writing makes you free in the literal sense.

What motivated me to pursue a career in freelance writing?

I have always been a writer. My life, even as a young kid revolved around reading books and stories. My first experience with the story world were courtesy of comic books. Here is where I learned to read, and from there, found a world I can call my own whenever I get my hands on a book. The love for words and creating a world through the paragraphs that I write was mainly the reason why I have longed to become a freelance writer and to make that dream a life for me.

Although, the life of a freelance writer is not as perfect as some would think it is. You’ll get a fair amount of criticism, rejections, unpaid projects and getting your creations published can be very difficult especially during the first few years of your writing career. There is no regular salary, your sick days and holiday are not paid for and you’ll have to pay for your insurance and health plans from the money that you get from your writing gigs. Luckily, I was brave enough to give up the stability and comfort that I used to had with a regular 8-hour job. I was also able to save enough from the past allowing myself some slack during the first few months of my career in freelance writing.

Freelancer writing allowed me to avoid the tiring daily commute that I had to endure back when I was still working in a n office. I get to write about topics I love and enjoy sharing my thoughts with. I get to work while wearing my favorite jeans with my favorite socks with one feet up on my favorite chair. Being able to attend every parent-teacher meeting, personally nursing my sick kids and getting to play with them whenever the feel like playing with me at any time of the day and any day of the weeks are just some of the fantastic perks that I get to enjoy as a freelance writer.

I get to choose the kind of life that I would like to live. This is indeed, the most significant of all the reasons why I embraced the freelance writing life.

What are the credentials you need to become a freelance writer?
Unlike what others may perceive, being a freelance writer does not require you to be a communications major or someone who has a degree in language and the arts. If you have the passion for writing, even without the natural talent that is present with some, you can become a freelance writer.

However, as you thrive to improve your crafts as a writer, you will see yourself reading books and articles that will update you with the current trends and demands of the market. What is important is for you to create a well-formatted and presented writing portfolio. The more high-quality your work portfolio is, the more impressing you will be for editors and companies that would most likely take your work.

About Me

My photo

A graduate of Civil Engineering but a writer by heart was the main reason why I figured out that the corporate life was not for me. I enjoyed being at home, far from the competitive atmosphere of a typical 8-hour job. I hated the idea of extending work hours at the office or bringing work at home. I cringe about the idea of having to prioritize work over my family and living. Luckily, i managed to break free from the corporate world after seven grueling years. Although I must say that I have learned a lot both personally and professionally from my office job, I would never see myself turning back after being able to achieve my dream of being at home and working online. As I try to reach my first million while working online I also plan on entering a home-based business in between blogging and taking care of my kids.
